How to maintain your ski mask ?

An essential part of caring for your ski equipment is understanding how to clean and maintain your ski mask (or visor) to ensure its longevity and your safety. The Diezz Sport team has therefore decided to reveal all the secrets of good maintenance.

HOW TO AVOID FOGGING IN YOUR SKI MASK?

Perhaps the first question to ask is: where does the fog come from?

This is a normal phenomenon that occurs mainly when there is a significant difference in temperature between your skin and your glasses. Moisture trapped in this way forms fog.

The water vapour in the air condenses and fine water droplets attach themselves to the screen or the lens of your mask, obstructing your vision.

Thus, several factors can increase the risk of fogging. Placing the mask on the forehead when not skiing, as the forehead is one of the areas that generate the most heat and moisture on the face.

A ski mask that is too tight increases the condensation of perspiration and taking off and putting on your ski mask increases the risk of fogging.

Tips:

One of the worst mistakes to avoid despite the strong temptation to do so is to wipe the inside of your mask in a hurry by rubbing it. This can damage the anti-fog treatment on the inside of the mask or visor. If your visor is fogged, allow it to dry naturally.

The vents in your mask may be covered by a cap, bonnet or even by your helmet in the wrong position. This prevents air from circulating.

When we are not skiing, we usually place the mask on our forehead. If possible, remove it completely during your breaks, as the forehead is one of the parts of your face that produces a lot of moist heat.

All ski masks come with a protective microfiber box and/or pouch. Simply storing your mask in its carrying case at all times will increase its durability.

For maximum comfort, choose the highest quality goggles. Ski visors and goggles from reputable manufacturers are designed for optimum performance.

The most interesting feature that a ski mask can have is the photochromic polarising technology, which combines your comfort with perfect clarity. Particularly versatile, the screen is tinted according to the brightness received, ranging from category 1 to 4.

This means that the skier can use it in overcast, cloudy or sunny conditions with high light levels. The lenses reflect according to the intensity of the U.V. rays (ultraviolet). For alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, freeride skiing and all other board sports, this technology provides extreme comfort.

How to remove scratches from your ski goggles?

A ski mask is an essential accessory for all your winter sessions. It is therefore essential to take care of it. As you know, all masks have an anti-scratch treatment on the outside.

However, it is not uncommon for this side to become scratched, depending on how much you use it, with more or less deep scratches.

If your mask has one or more scratches after a fall, you can reduce these with baking soda.

Mix baking soda with a few drops of water in a small bowl until a paste is formed. Using your finger, put some of this paste on the scratched glass and rub it gently in a circular motion with a clean cloth.

This will polish the surface and remove the scratches.

Here are some tips to increase the durability of your mask and reduce the risk of scratches.

  • Always store your mask in the carrying case or case provided at the time of purchase.
  • Never store it with car keys or other metal objects.
  • Never place your ski mask on a heat source or near a radiator. It will dry out too quickly, and this could cause damage to your accessory.

Why wear a ski mask?

Skiing is a very intense sport and is generally practised in the high mountains. The strong reverberation of snowy surfaces makes it necessary to wear eye protection during your outings.

Let us detail the reasons:

Weather conditions in the mountains vary greatly, from fog, so-called white days or even snowstorms, to ultraviolet glare.

These different light conditions considerably increase the risk of accidents. By wearing a ski mask, you protect your vision from any harmful elements.

It is possible to get pieces of ice or splinters in your eyes. The mask gives you an ideal, clear view. And it gives you a panoramic view of potential obstacles in front of you.

The purpose of this accessory is to protect your eyes, not only against harmful rays but above all against any projectile. It is important to know that snow reflects up to 80% of sunlight, which is 3 times more than water.

The glare is much greater on snow. The ski mask reduces this effect and protects your eyes from UV rays. The ski or snowboard mask protects the eyes from any aggression. It allows you to enjoy optimal vision in all weathers.

The most interesting feature of a ski mask is the photochromic technology. The latest generation of polarised and photochromic lenses adapt to the weather conditions over a range of outdoor temperatures from -10°C to +20°C.

This allows you to have a ski mask with optimal protection regardless of changes in weather conditions, from strong light to cloudy weather, and therefore to keep your visual acuity comfortable and accurate.

So take the time to check the characteristics of the screen before you buy.

How to clean your ski mask?

It’s hard to keep your screens dry when you’re “wrinkling”. To avoid any discomfort, proper care of your screens and frame is key.

Ski goggles are an essential accessory for anyone involved in snow sports such as alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, off-piste skiing and freestyle skiing. This sport can be practised quickly and dangerously, which is why your ski mask deserves to be treated with the utmost care.

The first rule is to avoid rubbing the inside and outside of the ski mask when it is wet.

To clean the outside of your ski mask screen, always use a soft surface, ideally the cleaning cloth provided by the manufacturer.

You can also use a microfiber cloth.

This type of cloth ensures that the quality of the glass is maintained without the potential for scratches and marks. Wipe the outer part gently, taking care not to press on the surface of the screen so as not to damage the anti-scratch treatment.

Important:

Be careful, the inner side of the screen is anti-fogged. It is therefore necessary to be as gentle as possible. You should avoid using a wet cloth or wiping the inside of the screen, as this can lead to more fogging.

If you fall and your ski mask gets covered in water or snow. Take it off and remove the excess snow, clean the ventilation holes.

Let it dry naturally by moving it around to circulate as much air as possible and then clean it with your dry microfiber cloth.

Maintaining your mask every day of skiing

It is necessary to take certain precautions after each use because of the material from which the ski mask is made and the treatment of the lenses.

All screens, regardless of the technology used, have an anti-fogging inner coating. And it is partly thanks to this coating that you can spend a decent day with clear vision.

For maintenance after each day of skiing, the first requirement is to avoid rubbing the inside and outside of the ski mask when it is wet.

The inner side of the lens is the most delicate because of the anti-fog coating. You should avoid using a wet cloth or wiping the inside of the mask, as this can damage the coating and lead to fogging during your next ski session.

However, remember that the less you touch the inside of the mask, the longer it will last.

For the outside of the mask, we recommend using a microfibre cloth, as this type of cloth will prevent scratches and marks.

To clean it, start by gently tapping the screen with your cloth. It is recommended that you use the cloth supplied by the manufacturer. Then let it dry in the open air.

Diezz Sport pro tips

Polarised photochromic lenses are designed for better visual comfort. Indeed, photochromic lenses allow the screen to be adapted according to the luminosity received, ranging from category 0 to 4.

  • Category 0: 80% – 100% transmission rate / night vision or bad weather
  • Category 1: 43% – 79% transmission rate / low light
  • Category 2: 18% – 42% transmittance / medium light
  • Category 3: 8% – 17% transmittance / high light
  • Category 4: 3% – 7% transmittance / high light

All categories filter out 100% of UVA and UVB.

This means that the skier can use it on cloudy, cloudy or sunny days, when there is a lot of light. The lenses reflect the intensity of U.V. rays (ultraviolet).

For alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, freeride skiing and all other board sports, this technology provides extreme comfort.

There is also the “MAGNET” technology, super-powerful magnets.

Particularly easy to use and incredibly practical, the MAGNET mask allows a one-handed screen exchange in the blink of an eye, without special tools.

This technology includes:

2 visors + a Silver category 3 screen + a Yellow category 1 screen, which offer you an unparalleled field of vision as well as immediate adaptation to the weather conditions that will allow you to have unique experiences in all weather conditions.

You have all the information you need to maintain and choose your mask.

To sum up

A ski or snowboard mask is essential for protection from the sun, snow, rain or wind. With its optical qualities, it preserves a field of vision, in all weathers. You liked this article, leave us a comment!
